Jo Spaans is a Reader in Church History at the Theological Faculty of
the University of
Utrecht. She obtained her Ph.D at Leiden University in 1989: Haarlem na de Reformatie.

She has held academic positions at the University of
Amsterdam, the Fryske Akademy, the Catholic Theological University of
Amsterdam, and the Free University of Amsterdam. During the academic year
1997/98 she was a visiting professor at the History Department of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
In 1998 she published a study of early-modern poor relief
in the Dutch province of Friesland: Armenzorg
in Friesland, 1500-1800. Publieke zorg en particuliere liefdadigheid in zes
Friese steden. Leeuwarden, Bolsward, Franeker, Sneek, Dokkum en Harlingen, Verloren 1998. In 2001 she edited a volume on
the revivals sweeping the Netherlands around the middle of the 18th
century: Een
golf van beroering. De omstreden opwekking in de Republiek in het midden
van de achttiende eeuw, Verloren 2001. More recent book
publications are: Het
beroerde Rome. Spotprenten op de paus, in een pleidooi voor een
ÔNederlandse katholieke kerkÕ, Verloren 2010 (with Trudelien van Ôt Hof), and Graphic
